We have four broad priorities and they are :

Better Sleep

That’s right! We want a better night’s sleep. The NHS advises adults to have between six and nine hours of sleep every night. It recommends regular sleeping hours, so as to programme the brain and internal body clock to get used to a set routine.

Residents want to follow NHS advice. We really do! Therefore, OTCC is keen to reduce noise from the following, between 21:00 and 06:00 :

  • Licensed businesses
  • Street buskers
  • Alarm bells
  • Short-term lets

Walkable Streets

Old Town is a magnet for locals and visitors, almost every day of the year. OTCC wants to make it easier for people to move about, as follows :

  • Banning A-Boards and street-advertising
  • Pedestrianising Victoria Street between 18:00 and 06:00
  • Returning Visitors to spend more time outside Old Town
  • Tour Buses running at 50% capacity, or more
  • Reducing Nitrogen Dioxide emissions below recommended levels
  • Business owners parking legally – and not on pavements, double yellow lines or in residents’ parking spaces
  • Non-residents opting for public transport rather than cars
  • No stag and hen parties

To be heard

  • CEC Planning Committee to provide reasons for accepting planning decisions that OTCC object to
  • Each elected Councilor attends at least two OTCC meetings a year. At least one elected Councilor to attend every meeting of the Community Council in their Ward.
  • When publicly-owned listed buildings are about to be sold off, the proposed developers demonstrate they are committed to appropriately restoring and maintaining listed buildings.
  • Introduce a 90-day limit per annum for ‘entire home’ party-flat short-term lets. Confirm if short-term lets are required to pay business rates or council charge.
  • Increase in the numbers of shops selling “made in Scotland” products. We would like the City of Edinburgh Council to launch a campaign similar to VisitScotland’s “taste our best”.
  • Independent and specialty shops and facilities aimed at residents of Old Town.
